General Synod / Te Hīnota Whānui

The 57th session of the Anglican General Synod in these islands opened on Sunday, May 7, in Christchurch.

The General Synod is like the parliament of the whole, gathered Three Tikanga Anglican Church, and it's held every two years. The 2006 General Synod/Te Hinota Whanui began with a powhiri outside Christchurch Cathedral.

The two host Bishops, The Rt Rev David Coles, Bishop of Christchurch, and The Rt Rev John Grey, Pihopa o Te Wai Pounamu can be seen between the two warriors performing the wero.

Next to him is Te Pihopa o Aotearoa, Bishop Brown Turei, who in turn is seated beside the Bishop of the Diocese of Polynesia, Bishop Jabez Bryce.

The Senior Bishop of Tikanga Pakeha, The Rt Rev George Connor, Bishop of Dunedin, is on the right of the row.

The powhiri was at times dramatic, and yet leavened with good humour. The Mayor of Christchurch, Mr Gary Moore, seemed to appreciate some of the lighter moments.
